About the Foreign Language Program

The Rice University Foreign Language Program offers non-credit classes in the following languages:

Spanish French Italian Portuguese
Arabic Russian Japanese Mandarin Chinese

The small group classes, averaging ten students per class, are designed to develop conversational skills. Progressive levels of each language are offered in evening classes throughout the year. On-site corporate programs are also available. The program attracts a variety of adult participants, including business people, international visitors, world travelers, young adults and retirees. Persons applying for these courses must have graduated from secondary school.

Course Information

  • Four sessions of evening classes, including all languages and proficiency levels, are offered yearly. Winter, spring, summer and fall sessions are eight weeks long with three hours of class per week.
  • Classes meet either Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:45-7:15 p.m. or 7:30-9 p.m. on the Rice campus.
  • Beginning French classes are also available Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 2:30 p.m.
  • Students will receive an email with their class schedule no later than the last business day before classes begin.

If you are enrolling in Spanish or French and are not a beginner, you must take the placement test. See the calendar for scheduled test dates. Non-beginning students of other languages will be contacted during the week before classes begin for an interview to determine placement.

Instructors

Foreign Language Program instructors are experienced teachers with advanced degrees who employ the most recent advances in second language methodology. They frequently incorporate current, culturally relevant articles and multi-media materials to supplement regular assignments.

Corporate Programs

On-site classes are available in each of the eight foreign languages. A minimum of nine students is required to offer a class. Courses can be tailored to meet the needs of Houston businesses. Classes emphasize speaking skills and are offered at beginning, intermediate or advanced levels of proficiency. Call 713-348-4019 for more information.
