Our Portuguese courses are designed to provide students with basic language patterns and practical vocabulary. Emphasis is placed on developing conversational skills that will be especially useful in business or travel. All levels of the program include some attention to reading and writing, and highlight interesting aspects of the Portuguese culture.
Classes meet either Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:45-7:15 p.m. or 7:30-9 p.m. The schedule for each session takes into consideration placement test results, teacher assignments, and classroom availability.
Beginning-level students (I-IV) are taught the essential conversational skills used in everyday situations (restaurants, offices, stores, etc.).
Intermediate-level students (V and VI) learn additional language patterns and vocabulary that will enable them to discuss more abstract ideas.
Advanced-level students (VII and above) develop more sophisticated vocabulary and have ample opportunity to practice complex structures. They discuss newspaper and magazine articles and literary selections in class.
Students at all levels should plan on at least one and one-half hours of homework per class.
Fee for eight-week session (3 hours weekly): $490 for 2024; $500 beginning 2025
Apply for the Foreign Language Program by completing the online application.
Non-beginning students of Portuguese will be contacted by the instructor during the week before classes begin for a phone interview to determine placement.
